LAC 4000 Introduction to Concepts and Theories in Social Science
This course is a critical introduction to the concepts and theories of the social sciences focusing on the analysis of issues that are part of our everyday experience. It examines the development of social theory from its beginning in the Enlightenment philosophy to modern social paradigms.
Remarks: Students may be exempted from this course provided that they meet the requirements as stipulated by the School.
LAC 5000 Perspectives on Language
This course examines the nature, structure, and variations of language. Aspects of language discussed include phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics. Other areas examined include language changes, variation in language, language and the brain, and language acquisition. The course ultimately aims at providing students with tools to better analyze language.
LAC 5001 Perspectives on Communication
The study of selected communication theories and models relating to the process of interpreting theories behind the meanings and symbols in the human communication process. Also, criticism and paradoxes in communication theories will be examanied.
LAC 5002 Research Methodology
This course aims to offer a broad introduction of methodological foundations and measurements used to study language and communication. It focuses on the fundamentals of research methods and ethics, from research design to report writing.
LAC 6000 Academic and Research Writing
This course allows the students to develop the tools to prepare formal academic research essays. This will be accomplished through the study of published academic work, the construction of a literature review, analysis of the structure and register of academic writing, and development of skills in paraphrasing, summarizing, and referencing.
LAC 6001 Discourse Analysis and Applications
This course analyzes the dialectical construct of language, language users, and context. Emphasis is on how meaning is and interpreted in situated contexts and how these constructions relate to social and cultural norms, preferences, and expectations. It gives an introduction to the major approaches in pragmatics and discourse analysis. The course also provides an overview of discourse analysis research and its applications.
LAC 6002 Intercultural Communication
The analysis of the interrelationships among culture, context, communication and their relative influences on perceptions, attitudes, values, beliefs, world views and behavioral patterns. Emphasis is on the interactions among cultures, dominant cultures and co-cultures.
LAC 7101 Ethnographic Approaches to Qualitative Research
This course provides an understanding of the principles and practice in ethnographic research. Emphasis is on enhancing students’ experience with research design, data collection techniques, data analysis and research writing. The course also develops research appraisal skills and an understanding of qualities that make a good ethnographer.
LAC 7102 World Englishes
This course introduces the forms and functions of varieties of Englishes in diverse geopolitical and sociolinguistic landscapes. It aims to develop understanding of the use and spread of English around the world. It also focuses on implications for international communication.
LAC 7103 Socioinguistics
This course presents aspects of linguistics concerned with the connections between language and society and the way people use language in different social situations. The content includes regional and social dialects, language and gender, age, and social status. It further covers studies on societal multilingualism, language change and language planning.
LAC 7104 Language, Identity, and Ideology
This course introduces approaches and methods to analyze how language, identity, and ideology intertwine in public discourse such as news, advertisements, and political campaigns. Upon completion of the course, students will be able to select methods appropriate for certain types of data, conduct systematic analysis of texts, and discuss the social implications of such texts.
LAC 7201 Organizational Communication
The study of the theoretical foundation for the analysis of communication problems/issues and practices in organizations. Emphasis is on various dimensions of communication in organizations.
LAC 7202 Gender, Sexuality and Communication
This course reviews theories of gender and sexuality with a focus on the application of those theories to the study of media such as films, television, and music. It employs gender and sexuality perspectives to examine how media representations reinforce or subvert social roles and ideologies, how gendered forms of communication have been theorized across different visual and print cultures, and the role of media forms in critiquing or contributing to wider social processes such as globalization, conflict, and social movements.
LAC 7203 Health Communication
The course examines perspectives, strategies, policies, planning, and research in communication for health promotion by health and hospitality entrepreneurs in the public and private sectors.
LAC 7204 Business Communication
This course presents the conceptual foundations of business communication, focusing on the practice of effective written, oral, and interpersonal communication in business situations. In addition, a variety of communication skills necessary for business are developed through practical exercises, case studies, and observation.
LAC 7205 Introduction to Media Studies
This course introduces key concepts in media studies media, language, and communication are more closely connected together now than ever. This course will give a range of topics related to media production, textual analysis, and audience studies. Students will take part in presentations, media viewings, and other in-class activities in order to better understand the impact of media in our lives.
LAC 8000 Seminar in Language and Communication Research
The study of different aspects and applications of quantitative and qualitative research in language and communication. Topics vary from semester to semester and may include research in interpersonal communication, rhetorical criticism, critical methods in organizational communication, reading, writing, listening, speaking, translation, CALL, second language acquisition, discourse analysis, and language testing and evaluation.
LAC 9000 Independent Study
A report on a well-focused topic related to language and communication under the supervision of an advisor. The report must be finished within the semester.
