Philosophy and Significance of the Program

“Developing interdisciplinarity, internationality, and inquisitive-mind and independent learning in the field of English Language Studies and Teaching”

Master of Arts in English Language Studies and Teaching (M.A. in ELST) is designed and developed around the following 4 principles: interdisciplinarity, internationality, inquisitive-mind and independent learner. These principles are the key characteristics enabling graduates to achieve NIDA’s philosophy: to be the Wisdom for Change.

This program is unique in that it equips students with both theoretical and practical knowledge in English Language Studies and Teachings. Graduates of this program will be equipped with knowledge and skills to excel in their academic and professional endeavors; they will be thoroughly trained for advanced studies, should they wish to pursue higher education or for higher responsibility position, should they wish to seek professional success.

 

Objectives

Graduates in M.A. in English language studies and teaching are expected to have the following qualities and capabilities:

  1. making appropriate choices to tackle ethical dilemmas in the academic and professional contexts;
  2. demonstrating an interdisciplinary knowledge of theories, approaches and significant concepts in English language studies and English language teaching;
  3. being able to apply the theories and concepts to explain issues in English language and English language teaching;
  4. possessing the ability to analyze issues related to English language studies and English language teaching and articulate facts and opinions to experts and non-experts in English language studies and English language teaching, locally and internationally;
  5. possessing independent and creative thinking;
  6. being responsible, adaptable and equipped with interpersonal communication skills and work cooperatively with others;
  7. aptly and appropriately using information technologies, computer programs and social media technologies to complement/ reinforce their academic endeavor such as research conduct, facilitate classroom instruction and academic presentations, individually or as a group.

 

Program’s Expected Learning Outcomes

ELO1 Demonstrate awareness of moral and professional ethics in both personal and professional conduct.
ELO2 Demonstrate knowledge of disciplinary and interdisciplinary theories and/or research methodologies in English language studies and teaching.
ELO3 Apply knowledge of theories, principles and techniques related to English language studies and teaching to develop communication competence.
ELO4 Use appropriate information and communication technology to facilitate the process of academic and research study.
ELO5 Analyze and discuss various issues related to English language studies and teaching in a clear and logical manner.
ELO6 Critique issues related to English language studies and teaching and/or produce methodologically sound research.

Qualifications of Applicants

  1. Thai and/or international applicants holding a Bachelor’s Degree (or higher) in any field of study, or having equivalent academic qualifications as required by the Institution council; and
  2. qualified according to the institution's criteria by taking a written exam and / or interview
  3. Regular-program applicants are required to study full-time;
  4. weekend-program applicants must have at least 1 year of work experience, based to the institute’s regulation related to qualification of week-end program applicants.

Selection Criteria

  1. Regular-program applicants are required to take a NIDA English admission test;
  2. applicants must submit English test result, a minimum NIDA TEAP score of 660 or a minimum TOEFL ITP score of 550, or a minimum iBT score of 60 or IELTS (Academic) of 6.0;
  3. those who pass this examination will be interviewed in English;
  4. weekend-program applicants are required to be interviewed in English.

* All regular-program Thai students of NIDA are required to take ND 4000 course as stipulated by NIDA regulations. ND 4000 is a non-credit, pre-foundation course offered by the Institute. It is organized prior to the beginning of semester.

**Students may enroll for elective courses offered by other Graduate School of NIDA, no more than 6 credits, subject to the approval of the Dean or the student’s supervisor. The course should have a subject related to this program of studies.
