This course aims to provide insights into academic and research writing principles and techniques with a particular emphasis on problems faced by student writers composing the following components of a research paper: abstract, introduction, literature review, methodology, findings, discussion and conclusion. Course participants will also critique academic and research papers that focus onthe teaching of English as an international language.
PET 6000 English Language Teaching Theories and Practices
This course provides comprehensive knowledge concerning English language teaching approaches and methods,and course design. It seeks to analytically clarify the assumptions behind these approaches and methods and encourage students to explore their own beliefs and practices in language teaching and course design. In addition, students are urged to explore teaching practices from a variety of perspectives with an expanded focus on teaching English in international contexts in order to discern the relationship between theory and practice.
PET 6001 Social Theories of Second Language Acquisition
This course explores the critical issues of second language acquisition viewed through different social lenses. Emphasis is placed on how concepts such as language, culture, ideology, identity (e.g., social class, ethnicity, gender) and community have been defined and analyzed in current SLA researchdrawing primarily on sociocultural theories. Students will understand the SLA process and practice seen through these theoretical lens in both ESL/EFL instructional and naturalistic contexts.
PET 6002 Qualitative Research Methodology in EnglishLanguage Teaching
This course involves an examination of the philosophy and theories which inform interpretive qualitative research with an emphasis on English language teaching. Key aspects, such as interpretive qualitative research, are examined, as well as the philosophical and methodological considerations involved in conducting qualitative studies. Students are immersed into a wide range of literature concerning interpretive qualitative research, including theoretical and methodological overviews, as well as ethnographies/qualitative studies dealing with English language teaching.
PET 6003 Quantitative Research Methodology in English Language Teaching
This course covers the various stages of quantitative research methods, including problemidentification, conceptual framework, hypothesis formulation, sampling, measurement, design, data collection, data analysisand application of descriptive and inferential statistical techniques within the context of English language teaching. Emphasis will be placed on solving problems using appropriate software programs.
PET 7001 Language, Discourse and Identity in English Language Teaching
This course introduces keyconcepts and approaches to studying the relationship between language, discourse and identity in national and transnational contexts. Italso explores the practice of language and identity which shapes and is shaped by discourse and ideologies. Students will understand how learner and teacher identities are constructed, negotiated or contested in the classroom and naturalistic settings and how power relations may empower or constrain educational opportunities available to them. Students will also apply their understanding inreal-world language learning and teaching situations.
PET 7002 Critical Issues in English Language Teaching
This course aims to explore the theoretical concepts underpinning the area of critical applied linguistics. Emphasis is placed on the development of a sound understanding of the role of ESL/EFL in various parts of the world and critical reflection on a number of issues concerningEnglish language teaching. Course content focuses on the role of ESL/EFL teachers, foreign language policies, the dominance of English as a foreign language and as a language of instruction, the native speaker as a model, the role of the non-native English speaking teacher, issues of inequality, cultural considerations in materials design, varieties of English, appropriate methodologies and socio-political issues related to language education.
PET 7003 Syntax for English Language Teaching
This course entails a comprehensive description of English grammar for teachers of English as a foreign language with a focus on grammar teaching. Students will learn how grammar can explicitly and implicitly be incorporated into foreign language teaching. Also included are topics such as grammar lesson plan development, error identification, common learner errors, evaluation of grammar activities and materials and the role of corrective feedback in EFL.
PET 7004 Academic and Professional Discourse
This course prepares students, researchersand scholars to investigate and analyze discourse in a variety of academic and non-academic settings. It provides an overview of discourse studies and various approaches used in spoken and written discourse analysis, especially for pedagogical purposes. Theories of genre and discourse are introduced along with innovative and interdisciplinary approaches to current discourse issues. Research into spoken and written academic and professional discourse is explored, especially in the ways that it can be fed into language pedagogy.
PET 7005 EnglishLanguage Testing and Assessment
This course offers an opportunity to critically analyze the central concepts in language testing and assessment. It provides students with a working knowledge of the basic principles and procedures for test construction and evaluation, and invites discussion of alternative forms of assessment. Goals and the rationale for different types of testing are surveyed and experience provided in developing and critiquing classroom test materials. Also discussed are general issues about the social and pedagogical context of language testing and specific issues relating to the testing of language skills.
PET 7006 TranslationStudies in English Language Teaching
This course focuseson translation theories and practice in English language teaching. It examines the place of translation in the ESL/EFL classroom and ways in which the teaching of literary and non-literary translation can be integrated. Research into the roles of translation in language acquisition, language pedagogy and testing is widely explored. Emphasis is also on codes of conduct and ethical concerns in using translation materials for English language teaching.
PET 8000 Seminar in Teaching English as an International Language
This course emphasizes discussionofvarious dimensions of teaching English as an international language. Topics include, but are not limited to, traditional and social linguistics, cognitive and social dimensions of second language acquisition, intercultural communicative competence, post-method pedagogy, classroom management, language testing and assessment, native versus non-native English speaking teachers, global Englishes and multilingual education.The discussion aims to stimulate a high level of critical and independent thinking. In other words, students will not only explain theoretical concepts and ideas but also draw connections among them, justify a stand or decision, share novel thoughts and produce new and original work.
PET 9900 Dissertation
This independent course requires in-depth, original and systematic investigation of a topic in English language teaching. The dissertation should display the student’s independent and critical thinking and meet international academic standards. The dissertation must also reflect extensive and substantial research on the topic specified and be exceptional in quality. An excerpt of the dissertation must qualify for publication in peer-reviewed journals.

This independent course requires in-depth, original and systematic investigation of a topic in English language teaching. The dissertation should display the student’s independent and critical thinking and meet international academic standards.
