Brief Program Description

The Doctor of Philosophy Program in Language and Communication (International Program), or the PLA program, is an interdisciplinary PhD program offered by the Graduate School of Language and Communication since 2010. The program, which uses English as the medium of instruction, aims to produce graduates with a solid theoretical background in language and communication, the strong research skills necessary for quality research publication, and the ability to apply knowledge on a practical level. To date, the program has produced graduates working at universities throughout Thailand with published research work in national and international refereed academic journals.

Program Philosophy

The education philosophy of the PLA program can be conveyed by three key phrases: interdisciplinarity, inquisitive mind, and independent learner. The program emphasizes students’ awareness and understanding of the roles of language and communication in society and aims to produce graduates who are experts in the combined fields of language and communication studies. The program also aims to produce graduates who critically analyze issues in language and communication and subsequently formulate questions in regard to those issues. In addition, the program’s graduates are expected to be capable of independently conducting research work to seek answers to their own academic enquiries and publish research in peer-reviewed academic journals.

The Program’s Expected Learning Outcomes (ELOs)

ELO1	Recognize moral and professional ethics in both personal and professional conduct
ELO2	Demonstrate knowledge of theoretical frameworks in language and communication
ELO3	Apply knowledge of moral and professional ethics to academic works.
ELO4	Apply knowledge in language and communication to demonstrate communicative competence
ELO5	Apply knowledge to select appropriate research methods
ELO6	Apply appropriate theories to explain issues in various social and cultural contexts
ELO7	Analyze and critique issues in language and communication
ELO8	Make theoretical and/or practical contribution to advance the field of language and communication

Study Tracks

The program offers the following three study tracks. The first track requires only dissertation work, while the second and the third tracks require both coursework and dissertation work. Students completing Track 2.2 receive both a master’s degree and a PhD in language and communication.

Qualifications of Applicants

• Applicants to Tracks 1.1 and 2.1 must hold a master’s degree in language and communication, linguistics, applied linguistics, teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL), communication studies, applied communication or other related fields from a university or institute accredited by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation.
• Applicants to Track 2.2 must hold a bachelor’s degree in language and communication, linguistics, applied linguistics, TESOL, communication studies, applied communication or other related fields from a university or institute accredited by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation.
• Applicants to Track 1.1 must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.70 and have a paper-based/ ITP TOEFL score of 600, an internet-based TOEFL score of 100, or an IELTS score of 7.5. In addition, to be considered for admission, applicants to this track must submit a complete dissertation proposal.
• Applicants to Track 2.1 and 2.2 must have a minimum paper-based/ ITP TOEFL score of 550, an internet-based TOEFL score of 79, or an IELTS score of 6.0. Applicants to these tracks must also submit a statement of purpose describing their study goals and research interests.

Criteria for Selecting Applicants

• All applicants must take an oral interview in English. Selection of applicants are based on their academic record, the content of their statement of purpose, their research knowledge, their English proficiency, their attitude, and their determination to pursue the degree.
• For Track 1.1, an applicant with previous publication in international refereed journal is preferred. Applicates to this track must also pass a qualifying examination before being able to enroll for dissertation credits.

Career Paths for Graduates

The PLA program aims to produce experts in the areas of language and communication who work as educators, researchers, or policy makers at educational institutions or government agencies.
