Graduates of this program will find employment in a number of professional careers such as:

Doctor of Philosophy in English Language Studies and Teaching (Ph.D. in ELST) is designed and developed to align with these 4 principles: interdisciplinarity, internationality, inquisitive-mind and independent learning. These principles reflect NIDA’s philosophy of creating and instilling wisdom to bring about change in society.
The program also aims to groom student to think critically, to have inquisitive mind and be intellectually curious. It intends to produce graduates who are independent learners with skills to learn and develop new things by themselves. The program also adheres to international quality assurance in terms of academic rigor and academic integrity. It also aims to broaden students’ international perspectives by exposing them to a rich diversity of international academic literature (i.e., course books, journals), topics, issues and activities that provoke students to think beyond their cultural boundaries and observe not only global differences but also commonalties within the realm of English language studies and teaching. Such international outlooks should enable them to better understand this increasingly interconnected and interdependent world full of changes yet filled with new learning opportunities.
The primary objective of the program is to produce graduates equipped with strong foundation in this interdisciplinary field and equipped and with skills necessary to problematize issues and seek knowledge to address those issues independently, systematically and ethically. Graduates in ELST are expected to have the following qualities and capabilities:
ELO1 | Demonstrate awareness of moral and professional ethics in both personal and professional conduct. |
ELO2 | Demonstrate ability to effectively communicate complex ideas and issues to specialists and non-specialists in English language studies and teaching. |
ELO3 | Apply knowledge of philosophies, principles and theories to explain various issues related to English studies and teaching. |
ELO4 | Use appropriate information and communication technology to facilitate the process of academic and research study. |
ELO5 | Demonstrate adequate theoretical and methodological knowledge to design disciplinary and interdisciplinary research in English language studies and teaching. |
ELO6 | Analyze and critique issues related to English language studies and teaching in a theoretically and logically appropriate manner. |
ELO7 | Develop original and methodologically sound research, which makes theoretical and/or practical contribution to the field of English language studies and English language teaching. |
Semesters
Qualifications of Applicants
2.2.1 Thai and/or international applicants holding of a Master’s Degree, with the GPA of 3.25 or higher, in English, Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, TESOL, or other related fields from a university or institute as required by the institution’s council (for applicants of Ph.D. program Track 1(1.1) and Track 2(2.1));
2.2.2 Thai and/or international applicants holding of a Bachelor’s Degree with first class honors in Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, TESOL, or other related fields from a university or institute as required by the institution’s council (for applicants of M.A. continuing to Ph.D. program Track 2(2.2));
2.2.3 Obtaining a minimum TOEFL ITP score of 600, or iBT score of 94, or an IELTS (Academic) of 7.0 (Track 1(1.1));
2.2.4 Obtaining a minimum TOEFL ITP score of 580, or iBT score of 79 or an IELTS (Academic) of 6.5 (Track 2(2.1) (2.2)).

Dissertation Defense
N.B. Students Track 1(1.1) must get an “S” grade from the Qualifying Exam, and Students Tracks 2(2.1), (2.2) who have completed all the coursework must take a Qualifying Examination and only when the student gets an “S” grade, the students may enroll for dissertation. The maximum numbers of years for studying are 6 years for Students track 1(1.1) and 2(2.1), and 8 years for Students track 2(2.2).

Student who is disqualified from the Ph.D. program in English Language Studies and Teaching because of the failure in passing the Qualifying Examination or Dissertation Proposal Defense/ Dissertation Defense, may register for 2 more courses to be eligible for M.A. in English Language Studies and Teaching and to meet the M.A. Program’s graduation requirements. The 2 more courses are:
